Margaret Grill has worked as a visual artist for more than 10 years, exhibiting with a diverse group of galleries and venues. She has received a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Studio Arts and a Bachelor of Liberal Arts in Art History from the University of Minnesota.

As a painter primarily working in landscape, my work has focused on the environments we experience everyday. I paint in a home-studio located in St Paul’s North End neighborhood. It is an industrial part of the city, but also home to open spaces and wetlands. I am interested in painting the overlap of human-made spaces and areas allowed to be wild. My work also reflects how those boundaries have shifted through generations and continue to change. While my art tends to focus on the landscape around me, it is representative of much bigger environmental issues concerning the world at large. My painting process involves a technique where I dilute water-soluble oils to create a wash and let it spill over the surface. The wash forms a shape akin to a line of trees seen from afar or of brush underfoot. I then build up layers in both an abstract and realistic painting style to create the texture of an environment. Depicting landscape through a meditative painting process allows me to communicate an emotion or concern about the natural world that will evoke memory, spark a reaction, and start a conversation.
